How did people in the 1950s afford to live like they did?
Q. People in the 1950s married at 18 or 19 years old, had a child a year, bought a home and had a TV and a car all by the time they were 25 years old. And people lived by one income, which was the husband's, since most women were stay at home moms back then. How did people afford to do that back then?
Asked by J.B. - Tue Jun 30 23:13:56 2009 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Things were cheaper in the 50's compared to their salaries. Very little things were imported, it was all made in the US that kept plenty of jobs for the working people and the pay was good. We weren't at war and spending lots of money for that. The housewives didn't just set at home. They cooked all of the meals and packed lunches for the husband and kids. You ate left overs instead of throwing them out. You seldom ate out. The moms also made most of the clothing for the family and drapes and slipcovers, and quilts for the house. Children didn't know about nor care about designer clothing. People didn't sue at the drop of a hat so insurance premiums were really low including health insurance. People worked so we didn't have a lot… [cont.]

How has television changed from the 1950s to now?
Q. How were people effected by television in the 1950s? And now? What are the differences in TV programs? And in the actors/actresses? What different types of audiences were there?
Asked by Gilmore Girl - Fri Feb 6 12:18:56 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The 50's were all about family shows, like Leave it to Beaver. Now, TV has turned to being more revealing and trashy. Like Reality TV for instance. Society was different back then. People kept their business their business and took pride in how they were viewed. Now, most people on TV don't care. They'll do any thing. The difference is now you gat paid to do stupid things on television. The more stupid the better, or higher ratings. Back in the 50's you would have been looked down upon for presenting yourself in such a manner. Women normally were portrayed as the glamour girl, or the stay at home wife. The man usually was the boss and went to work. Now, there are all types of scenerios. There are pros and cons to every generation. Hope I… [cont.]

What kind of plastic was used in vintage 1950s dolls and is there a way to eliminate their unpleasant odor?
Q. These dolls made in the early 1950s are know as hard plastic dolls and the plastic they are molded from often takes on an unpleasant smell when exposed to changes in temperature and humidity. I would like to find a method of eliminating this odor. Thank you!
Asked by Lucy - Tue Mar 6 17:28:43 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The smell is probably due to mold or bacteria. If the dolls are dressed, then the smell is probably coming from their clothes. If the entire doll is made out of plastic, then you have to clean the plastic. Take some bleach (the kind used in laundry), dilute it (to test it out just use a few drops of the bleach and ~10 times as much water), dip a paper towel in that, and try cleaning the doll with it. Clean a part that is not normally visible, such as the back or the bottom. It shouldn't damage it, but if it does it's really out of the way. If it does not damage it then you can use bleach to clean it. The bleach will kill both mold and bacteria. After you wipe off the doll with bleach wipe it off again with a wet paper towel to get… [cont.]

A. Well, unless that sport became a modern pastime, it may not be that important to cite the significance of it. You may want to find information about the introduction of Australian sports into nearby aboriginal regions, and what reaction it had to them.

What were some of the main issues, pressures of problems in the 1950s family?
Q. What kinds of issues/pressures did a family deal with in the 1950s. My guess that one of the issues the family may have dealt with was women considering working. I read somewhere that in the event a woman did work, she was to blame for a husbands alcohalism, or her kids' social issues. Anybody else have any ideas?

A. Bobby Johns I think his nickname may have been "Shorty" or eiher shorty was his dad In the first article above Bobby Johns was asked to be an instructor in the army and he taught other guys how to work on the army's equipment. The article describes Bobby Johns as being a fun guy and rumor got around that if you wanted to have fun in the army then you would try to get in Bobby Johns' unit. It's possible if your grandfather was a mechanic in the army then he may have been in the same unit. Bobby is short for Robert (Robert Johns)

Q. How did the minority groups struggle for civil rights begin in the 1950s? Which event from this time do you think was most responsible for bringing public attention to the American Civil Rights Movement? Explain why you selected this event.
Asked by MissQueenBee - Sun Nov 23 19:52:58 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Civil Rights Movement is sometimes defined as a struggle against racial segregation that began in 1955 when Rosa Parks, the "seamstress with tired feet," refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus in Alabama. Brown v. Board of Education, the 1954 Supreme Court case that attacked the notion of "separate but equal," has also been identified as the catalyst for this extraordinary period of organized boycotts, student protests, and mass marches. These legendary events, however, did not cause the modern Civil Rights Movement, but were instead important moments in a campaign of direct action that began two decades before the first sit-in demonstration. Should we start locking people in mental hospitals against their wills as we did pre-1950s?
Q. Today you cannot lock someone up against their will even if they clearly are seriously disturbed. Mental health advocates pushed for the release of tens of thousands of patients in mental hospitals in the 1950s (consequently, that's just when the homeless population begin to soar too). Should we go back to the days when we could lock up dangerous, sick people?

Q. How did people, the public and the government respond to the peaceful protest marches the civil rights movement and Martin Luther king held in the early 1950s?
Asked by Grapey - Thu Nov 26 15:32:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. African Americans, for the most part, were in favor, as were liberal whites. Otherwise, the marches spawned renewed activity by the Ku Klux Klan, hateful protest behavior by whites who didn't agree, and got the federal government and the state militia involved in supporting desegration of schools (not to mention the U.S. Supreme Court). As the '50s moved on, and into the early '60s, the federal government (FBI) started spying on and infiltrating African American and white groups who supported desegregation. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was infiltrated and people were attacked and threatened with death. I believe that several SNCC members were framed for murdering African Americans. Throughout all of this, the… [cont.]

Was housing more affordable in the 1950s in relationship to average income?
Q. I once heard a sociologist on a PBS program talking about how the cost of housing in the 1950s was much lower. I wasn't sure if this was because of the amount the loans were written for or the interest rates but I want more information on this. Anyone got any data on contributing factors or the heart of this phenomena? Or even the veracity of this claim?
Asked by C W - Fri Nov 27 16:39:29 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on your interpretation. 1. Housing took up a smaller part of the total household budget in the 1950s than it does now. It now takes about 40% whereas it used to take 30%. 2. Houses back then tended to be much smaller, and more people rented than owned. The percentage of households owning has gone up significantly. 3. The cost of buying a house, as expressed in terms of median income, has risen: 4. So it is clear that a typical American family in the 50s could not afford the house that a typical American family lives in today. That leaves the question of whether people are paying more (i.e. a higher percentage of their income) because they want more and are willing to pay for it; because they have no choice; or… [cont.]

A. Back then, they used what is referred to as "pin curls". It's where you wind up sections of hair into little swirls, and hold it in place with bobby pins. Very effective to get curly WILD hair. lol :D My mother used to pin curl my hair (long time ago) and it never failed to give me a lot of body.

Q. I know what communism is, but what exactly would happen if it did start to become popular in the United States in the early 1950s? I want a detailed answer but nothing exaggerated please. :) Thanks..
Asked by The Wolf - Thu Jan 22 22:47:58 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It doesn't matter if it was popular or not because the US government would never allow it to occur. However had this nation turned communist we would probably follow the USSR because on paper communism works but people are naturally greedy and always looking to get ahead thus people will never be equal. I feel the nation would stagnate economically and eventually turn capitalist again but this is all speculation.
