What were mental institutions like in the 1960s and 1950s?
Q. What were the conditions like? And was there racism against African Americans in mental institutions in the 1950s 1960s? What did doctors do to treat patients?

A. first of all it's miss evers not every and that was not about mental institutions. there was racism pretty much everywhere in the 50's and 60's and certainly the mental institutions were not exception. Black and white patients were never housed together even in a normal hospital. remember the motto for that time period was separate but equal..but we all know nothing was ever equal. geraldo rivera opened the sad state of affairs in a place called willow brook in new york. he took cameras in with him which showed patients just laying around nude or with dirty diapers on. not children either, i mean adults. they were hovered in corners staring at the walls, moaning with hunger and thirst. it was beyond belief. so that pretty much… [cont.]
